Shingo Tsukuda is a woodworking artist that lives in Kyoto and makes works all through the process by himself, from creating wooden base materials to the lacquering with Japanese urushi. He uses different woodworking techniques, such as Kurimono (hollowed-out forms), Sashimono (fine cabinetmaking, or joinery), and decoration techniques, such as Zougan (inlay). After having been working at a furniture factory and a carpentry shop for 15 years, he became an independent artist in 2004. Thanks to the time when he worked as a craftsman, he is equipped with knowledge and skills that allows him to produce works that are rooted in tradition while at the same time meets the needs of the present. He mainly produces boxes, trays and drinking vessels.
