Born in Fukuoka in 1975, Sumiko Ishii studied Japanese literature and classical art at Ritsumeikan University. Her thesis, ¡ÈThe Dwelling of the People of Manyoshu¡É, sparked a deep interest in the design of everyday life. After graduation, she worked in interior design and architectural offices, and obtained her second-class architect license.
She began creating handcrafted works that capture the ¡Èdroplet-like beauty¡É found in everyday life, combining the gifts of nature with the skill and heart of human hands.
At gallery Shirata, which she founded, she curates exhibitions exploring the possibilities of craft in collaboration with artisans, offering a space that connects creators, their works, and everyday living, while celebrating the enduring appeal of handmade objects.
