Yoshito Sasayama is a ceramic artist based in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. He fires his work in a traditional anagama (cave kiln) in Marubashira, Iga, a region known for its donabe (earthenware pots). Using wood-fired techniques, he repeatedly fires his pieces, exploring a wide range of methods including unglazed yakishime, natural ash glazes, white slip decoration, and hikidashi-guro (pulled-black). His work emphasizes the texture and expression of the clay itself. Rather than being bound by regional names or specific techniques, Sasayama¡Çs approach is rooted in a dialogue with the clay—each form emerging through his search for what best suits the material at hand.
